Roadmap Glossary

Priority Areas

Priority Areas are the key societal concerns on a national and global level, where the RSC and the chemical sciences can have a role to play in providing innovative solutions.

UPC

Universal Policy Context covers horizontal issues that affect and define the chemical sciences and their application in real terms. The Universal Policy Context may include diversity, education, skills, ethics, government policy etc.

Key Issues

Key Issues are the main problems within each Priority Area. These form a starting point for the road mapping process.

Visions

Visions will be set for each Key Issue. They will be technology focussed and represent solutions to the related Issue. Visions will provide overall direction for the Roadmap Milestones within each Key Issue.

Challenge

A challenge is the amalgamation of a Key Issue and Vision under a specific Priority Area. Used predominantly in the two phases of the online consultation.

Roadmap Milestones

Roadmap Milestones will be set for each Challenge and will make up the body of the Roadmap. They will highlight specific chemical science opportunities for the scientific community and relevant stakeholders over a period of 10 years to ensure that the challenge is realised. For each Roadmap Milestone UPCs will also be addressed.

Scoping Group

A one off meeting of specially selected individuals who will scope the big opportunities for chemical sciences in the future based on a series of 10 initial Priority Areas.

Exploration Workshops

Workshop to bring together all the big thoughts and themes that have emerged throughout the scoping group, exploration workshops and current RSC policy work. Define the issues and visions for each Priority Area as Challenges and identify potential opportunities for the chemical sciences in order to meet the challenge.
